But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.
God tells us he waited until the time had fully come. He made sure that the nations were lined up exactly where he wanted them to be. He prepared the way by making sure Greek was generally spoken in the immediate area. He pushed the Romans to develop a good road system so messages could be delivered quickly and safely. He prompted Caesar Augustus to issue a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. God prompted him to do it while Quirinius was governor of Syria. God is the one who sent his son. God is the one who made sure his son was born of a woman, so that he was born under the law. He wanted Jesus to be placed under the law, so he would obey it. Why did God do all that? Look at the passage. Look at the reason God manipulated whole nations!
“To redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.” He wanted to redeem… us. Jesus is God’s Child, and he trusted his Father in a way we never could, from the moment he was first laid in a manger, until he was laid in a tomb, and every moment in between. He even trusted when on the cross he took the punishment for every time we failed to trust. And he gave us his record as the good Child. He made us God’s children. And then, God gave us the full rights of sons. God has taken away our distrust and given us a Savior. And now you’re not only a child in God’s household, but also an heir. And heir to God’s kingdom!
That’s nice, isn’t it? You’ve got an inheritance… but does that really help you today? The world out there still seems to hate us, or at least treat us with complete apathy. They don’t care about the real Christmas, about Jesus coming! The world is going to close out God! The sinful world has always hated God. But God has a way of dealing with that.
