Have you ever wondered how your favorite author comes up with his or her ideas? How they come up with the compelling characters, the intriguing plot developments, the weird worlds? Does it take an especially creative (or demented?) mind to do this?
I’ll go out on a limb and say that no, I don’t think it does. What it does take is hard work, attention to detail, and a willingness to put in the time to learn how to do it well. I’ve been on and off reading books on writing fiction for the last couple years, and it seems like every time I dive into one, I come up with all kinds of new ideas. But developing those ideas stil takes a lot of effort.
In his book on writing science fiction and fantasy, Orson Scott Card says that writing is only about ten percent talent. The rest is perseverance and technique, both of which can be developed. So if you’re thinking that someday you hope to be like your favorite author, the good news is you have a fighting chance. But you need to do the work.
