To The States Respectively, and to The People. –Flash Friday

“You hear? Channing’s reelected!”

The grizzled local eyed the out-of-towner suspiciously. “Who?”

“…Your President. Chief Commander! Don’t follow politics??”

“Ain’t from ’round here, Boy? Thiss’ Carolina, ain’t Washington nu’more.”

“But… you’re subjects of The People’s Republic of America! But a day’s drive north!”

“Son, I got eighty years, watchin’ you folks churn out laws and ‘lections like cows churn crap. Ain’t nobody paid heed for nigh a century, since y’all went broke. Tell ME who’s king? Caleb Winston’s served this town well for half my life.

“But you idiots can keep your ‘lections goin’ up there if you want. Don’t make no difference here.”

FLASH! It’s Flash Friday, the day when Seeking New Earth authors write short stories up to 1000 words (“flash fiction”) or 110 words (“microfiction”). 1. I like this — a window into a very different government set-up. Almost city-statish. Vassal states are supposed to pay taxes/tribute but really don’t get much out of it. It makes me wonder what level of communications technology these people have — are they even able to follow elections, or do they simply choose not to? I’m intrigued by the set-up.
