Flash Friday: Candles in the Attic

“Can’t we please put them away?”

“No. Not until we’re done.” Michael lit another candle.

Amanda wrapped her arms around herself. “Come on. I’m cold.”

“You’re always cold.”

“It kinda goes along with the whole being dead thing.” She pushed a dark strand of hair behind her ear.

“We need to tell mom.”

“By lighting candles in the attic.” Amanda wrinkled her nose. “Right.”

Michael grunted. “She’s smart. She’ll figure out the clues.”

Something out the window caught Amanda’s eye. “Mike? Come look at this.”

“Michael,” he corrected as he approached the glass.

Men carried their mother out bound in a clean white coat.

“I think we overdid it, Mike.”
